Temetra is Itron’s next-generation meter data collection and management platform, enabling utilities to collect, store, and analyze data from millions of endpoints worldwide.Founded in 2002 in Clonmel, Ireland, Temetra became part of Itron in 2015. Today, the platform is deployed across Europe, Australia, and North America, supporting tens of millions of meters in more than 80 countries.

Temetra provides a comprehensive range of data collection capabilities, from manual and mobile meter reading (including walk-by and drive-by AMR) to large-scale fixed-network AMI deployments. The platform integrates with IoT networks and enterprise utility systems to deliver a scalable, end-to-end solution for utility customers.

Built on a Linux-based technology stack, Temetra leverages distributed systems, NoSQL data stores, search technologies, and modern web applications to deliver a highly available, cloud-based platform. As a multi-tenant, single-version SaaS solution with daily releases, the Temetra R&D team is responsible for both developing and operating the production environment.

About the Position

Itron is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join the Temetra development team. In this role, you will help design, build, and support a market-leading meter data management platform that processes information from millions of connected devices worldwide.

You will contribute to the continued evolution of a highly scalable, cloud-based application serving utility customers across multiple geographies. This position offers the opportunity to work across backend and full-stack technologies while collaborating in an agile, DevOps-oriented environment focused on innovation, operational excellence, and customer success. The ideal candidate is technically strong, highly collaborative, and motivated by solving complex engineering challenges that enable utilities to manage critical energy and water infrastructure more effectively.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality backend and/or full-stack components for the Temetra web application.

  • Deliver scalable, reliable, and secure software solutions that support utility customers managing millions of connected devices.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements, design technical solutions, and deliver business value in an agile environment.

  • Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decision-making, helping shape the future direction of the platform.

  • Improve system performance, reliability, maintainability, and code quality through continuous enhancement and modernization initiatives.

  • Demonstrate accountability by taking ownership of features and services throughout their lifecycle, from design through deployment and operational support.

  • Support a DevOps culture by participating in monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, and production issue resolution.

  • Partner with product, project, and customer-facing teams to deliver innovative solutions that address evolving utility industry needs.

  • Mentor and support fellow engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and best-practice adoption.

  • Champion customer-centric thinking by ensuring software quality, operational excellence, and positive user experiences.

  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team culture that values diverse perspectives, continuous learning, and authentic communication.

  • Participate in daily releases and continuous delivery processes to ensure rapid and reliable deployment of new capabilities.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 4+ years of professional software development experience.

  • Strong experience designing and developing Java-based applications.

  • Experience building and maintaining web applications and RESTful services.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in agile software development teams.

  • Experience operating within DevOps environments and supporting production systems.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and debugging capabilities.

  • Experience working in Linux-based development and deployment environments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership and accountability for deliverables.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and delivering value to customers.

Preferred Skills & Experience

Experience with one or more of the following technologies and concepts is highly desirable:

  • Spring Framework and related Java ecosystem technologies.

  • Front-end development using JavaScript and modern web frameworks.

  • Relational and/or NoSQL database technologies.

  • Large-scale distributed systems and concurrency concepts.

  • Cloud-native application development and SaaS platforms.

  • Containerization and CI/CD tools such as Docker and Jenkins.

  • Git-based source control and collaborative development workflows.

  • Apache Solr or similar search technologies.

  • Infrastructure automation and configuration management tools such as Chef.

  • Experience developing software for utilities, energy, water, IoT, telemetry, AMI, AMR, or related industries.

  • Experience supporting highly available, multi-tenant applications serving global customers.

  • Passion for mentoring others and fostering a culture of learning, agility, collaboration, and technical excellence.

Pay Transparency Info:

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location. The base salary is $75,000 – $111,500
