Overview

The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating and maintaining high-quality technical documentation for GIS solutions while leveraging their expertise in Esri technologies and solution design.

This role sits at the intersection of GIS consulting, data engineering, and enterprise application integration. The Technical Writer will be responsible for producing high-quality documentation across all project phases, from discovery and requirements gathering through data migration, integration design, training, and go-live, ensuring that technical decisions, processes, and outcomes are clearly captured for diverse audiences including GIS analysts, IT administrators, field operations staff, and executive stakeholders.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including user manuals, solution architecture diagrams, workflows, data mapping specifications, schema comparison reports, cutover runbooks and training materials for GIS applications.
  • Document discovery workshop outputs covering commodity workflows (Electric, Gas, Water, Fiber), data models, IT landscape, interfaces, and project impacts.
  • Work closely with GIS analysts, data engineers, developers, integration architects, stakeholders, and third-party system vendors to understand technical workflows and translate them into clear, user-friendly documentation.
  • Document Utility Network configuration specifications including domain networks, tier management, subnetwork definitions, and topology rules.
  • Produce integration readiness assessments capturing UN-compatibility evaluations, gap analyses, and backward-schema mapping requirements and ensure documentation adheres to industry standards and best practices, focusing on accuracy and usability.
  • Create visual aids such as diagrams, data flow diagrams, and architecture diagrams and infographics to support written content.
  • Create and maintain traceability matrices linking business requirements to technical design decisions across all project phases and organizational goals.
  • Develop role-based training content for multiple user groups and author quick reference guides, step-by-step SOPs, and annotated workflow diagrams for post-migration operations.
  • Support Organizational Change Management (OCM) by producing stakeholder communications, FAQs, and change impact summaries throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior team members in documentation practices and technical writing standards.
  • Stay updated on emerging GIS technologies and trends to incorporate relevant information into documentation.
  • Support presales and client-facing activities by preparing technical presentations and proposals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, English, Technical Writing, or a related field.
  • 8 to 12 years of experience in technical writing, solution design, or GIS development.
  • Expertise & demonstrated experience documenting ArcGIS platform implementations, preferably ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, or ArcGIS Utility Network.
  • Working knowledge of utility operations across at least one commodity domain: Electric, Gas, Water, or Fiber.
  • Proven ability to document complex system integrations including API flows, data exchange mechanisms, and enterprise middleware.
  • Strong understanding of geospatial concepts, including projections, coordinate systems, and data models.
  • Proficiency in tools such as MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, and diagramming software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in mentoring or leading teams is a plus.

Nice-to-Have (not mandatory):

  • Prior exposure to ArcFM or Smallworld GIS environments and migration projects.
  • Knowledge of ETL concepts, data modelling, and geodatabase schema documentation.
  • Experience working in agile or hybrid project delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems such as SCADA, OMS, ADMS, AMI, Maximo etc. or similar utility operational platforms.
  • Understanding of Organizational Change Management (OCM) frameworks.
