Overview

TRC’s Research and Consulting (R&C) team, within the Advanced Energy practice, is focused on developing and deploying decarbonization and clean energy solutions for our clients - utilities, non-profits, local governments, and state and federal agencies. R&C is a multi-disciplinary research-based consulting team that helps internal and external clients develop and optimize scaled clean energy solutions grounded in technological, economic, policy, market, and customer insights. Our research consulting projects are focused on how advanced energy solutions like energy efficiency, demand management, distributed energy resources, emerging tech, microgrids, storage, and electrification can help drive the clean energy transformation.

R&C’s Research Consultants conduct research and analysis to help address clients’ needs through discrete, funded projects focused on advanced energy solutions. This includes designing, implementing, and communicating insights from a wide range of research and analysis approaches, drawing upon advanced energy industry subject matter expertise, and helping clients understand how to use these insights.

Associate Principal Research Consultants are senior management professionals in leadership positions who oversee sophisticated research and consulting projects; help build our team’s expertise in data analytics and other areas, and the clean energy industry; and participate in the evolution of our business. No project is the same, and Associate Principal Research Consultants lead lots of different types of work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Associate Principal Research Consultants will design and oversee large, complex projects that incorporate sophisticated research and analytics. Associate Principal Research Consultants will also support the career development of more junior research consultants. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate with internal technical team members and external customers.

Responsibilities

While the focus will vary based on project needs, the overall responsibilities of Associate Directors are as follows:

  • Mentorship
    • Act as mentor and coach to develop internal talent for the future of the practice, providing constructive feedback proactively using thoughtful approaches and promoting growth-mindset and open feedback on the team
  • Research design and project planning
    • Develop research approaches and project plans independently that will address clients’ needs, incorporate own subject matter expertise and collaborating with other subject matter experts from across organization to ensure that projects incorporate industry leading comprehensive, multi-disciplinary solutions
    • Design data analytics projects, research studies, and program evaluations that apply state-of-art methodologies within relevant regulatory structures.
  • Project oversight
    • Oversee project teams on the delivery (scope, schedule, and budget) of research consulting and analytics projects and portfolios
    • Ensure the quality of team members’ work products
    • Ensure that clients are satisfied with team members’ communication and project delivery, proactively escalating clients’ problems to senior management
  • Research oversight
    • Instruct and oversee junior and mid-level team members in the design and implementation of primary and secondary research:
      • Web scraping and online ethnographic research
      • Literature reviews, benchmarking, and other secondary research
    • Instruct and oversee junior and mid-level team members in analysis, including:
      • Cleaning, coding, and analyzing, and interpreting primary data
      • Data management, statistical analyses, market analytics, and data visualizations
      • Advanced data modeling techniques
      • Program evaluation, forecasting, and market research
    • Coordinate with methodological and domain experts from across the organization to ensure quality of research
    • Instruct and oversee junior and mid-level team members in synthesizing information across multiple data sources and translating results of research projects into clear, actionable recommendations for clients
  • Industry Expertise
    • Maintain and expand expertise in data analytics, program evaluation, and market research, and the clean energy industry through technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations
    • Educate internal team in areas of expertise and create opportunities to connect areas of expertise to other use cases
    • Identify and implement new approaches to improve and expand our data analytics, evaluation, and market research expertise
  • Team leadership
    • Play leadership roles related to developing and executing team strategy, internal trainings, process improvements, and internal initiatives
    • Understand and reinforce team’s strategies, priorities, and internal initiatives through individual actions as well as team communications
    • Identify opportunities and coach team members in how to support team’s strategic priorities and initiatives
    • Contribute to healthy team culture by promoting collaborative work environment, embodying growth mindset, and recognizing team members
  • Business development
    • Contribute to proposals, including leading development of small proposal efforts and supporting development of larger, complex proposals
    • Identify opportunities to expand work with existing and new clients, as well as partnership opportunities

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are those an applicant must possess to be considered a candidate for the position.

  • PhD with 6+ year of experience, or Master's degree with 8+ years' experience, or Undergraduate degree with 10+ years' experience
    • Applicable degrees include Economics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, Public Policy, Business, or other relevant fields focused on research or evaluation.
    • Demonstrated competency and experience in data analytics and applied research or evaluation (in years of experience corresponding to degree, as listed above)
  • Demonstrated competency and experience overseeing delivery of team-based research and/or consulting projects.
  • Thorough understanding of the clean energy industry as well as fundamentals of research methods and design.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and can-do attitude.
  • Capable of maintaining positive attitude and high energy level to handle a dynamic, fast-paced workload.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications are not required for an applicant to be considered a candidate for the position.

  • Experience supporting the career development of staff (in a mentorship role).
  • Experience contributing to proposals and other business development pursuits.
  • Experience leading internal trainings efforts, process development, or other internal initiatives.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with utilities or the clean energy sector, including one or more of the following:
    • Energy efficiency, demand management, and/or other distributed energy resources
    • Utility programs and regulation
    • Clean energy technologies and/or building systems
    • The clean energy market
    • Energy codes and/or appliance standards
  • Research experience with methods including one or multiple of the skills below:
    • Surveys
    • Data analysis and modeling, including regression and fixed-effects panel methods
    • Inferential statistics
    • Sample design and weighting
    • Segmentation
    • Other structured research methods
    • Program evaluation
    • Cost-effectiveness analysis methods
    • Literature review
    • Research presentation
  • Proficiency in one or more of the software listed below:
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Smartsheet
    • R, Python, or other syntax-based quantitative analysis tools
    • Qualtrics
    • DeDoose or Nvivo
    • PowerBI
    • Mural, Miro, Visio, or similar tool

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.

Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
