Overview

The Distribution Designer I will perform field data collection, detailed design of overhead and/or underground electric distribution systems and back-office work to support those functions. This work includes gathering field data for designs, entering the information into various programs and the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications and estimates as defined by the client’s scope of work document.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of electric distribution design packages, including overhead and underground layouts, under the guidance of senior designers or engineers.
  • Use design tools such as AutoCAD and GIS to develop drawings, sketches, and material lists.
  • Conduct site visits to collect field data and document existing infrastructure conditions.
  • Apply TRC or client design standards to ensure compliant and accurate deliverables.
  • Support the preparation of project documents such as BOMs, permit sketches, and service requests.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete design assignments on schedule and within scope.
  • Participate in quality reviews and incorporate red lines and markups as needed.
  • Maintain organized project records and drawing files.
  • Perform other duties assigned to support project delivery and team success.
  • Transfer field notes to a structural design and contribute to the preparation of cost estimates, specifications, evaluation, and requisitions.
  • Preparation of engineering calculations (pole loading, guying, transformer sizing, conductor loading/sagging).
  • Coordinate design development to meet project schedules. Achieve weekly billable goal as defined by the project guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or the equivalent in a technical field preferred.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years relevant experience required with no degree.
  • DEG Management may consider other education and work experience to be acceptable for appointment to this position.
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD and/or GIS tools.
  • Willingness to learn utility standards, design practices, and field procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions.
  • Familiarity with electric distribution systems (poles, transformers, conductors).
  • Experience working with LUMA, PREPA, or FEMA-related infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of NESC or NEC codes is a plus.
