Overview
The Principal Engineer is the primary technical resource on software implementation & integration projects within the IGS (Intelligent Grid Solutions) practice at TRC and is responsible for the overall technical success of the project. The principal engineer is a customer facing subject matter expert (SME) for Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) implementation and integration projects, technology driven, resourceful, deadline-oriented and has strong analytical and root cause analysis skills. They will manage the technical deliverables of the implementation project including overseeing a team of technical resources, scheduling, configuring, testing, tracking and managing technical tasks. The principal engineer works closely with the Solution Architect (SA) and the Project Manager (PM) to ensure that the technical solution meets the customer’s needs and business objectives and ensures that the delivery of the technical solution falls within TRC Digital Solutions standard processes and tools and can fill in for Solution Architects for the project.
The Principal Engineer can also act as a solution lead on a project and must take full ownership over the technical aspect of the project and ensure that there are no “surprises” to the Project Management. They will act as the primary technical resource that will work closely with our software vendor partners, clients, and onshore and offshore project teams to deliver world class solutions that solve our customers’ current and future challenges. The principal engineer will possess the ability to work independently, and multi-task in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Adheres to the TRC Software Implementation Delivery Methodology
- Assists Project Manager with scope management, project planning, milestones and work and resource estimates
- Provides end to end technical oversight and assumes overall responsibility for the success and integrity of the technical solution
- Provides technical leadership of subcontractor work and deliverables
- Co-facilitates workshops, provides technical expertise and captures requirements
- Manages the expectations of the customer or business partner in coordination with PM
- Acts as a technical expert supporting the Solution Architect in the design of the solution to meet the customer requirements
- Formally presents project deliverables to Client project team members at the end of design phase
- Participates in the Build and Test phase of the project (configures and tests) and provides technical leadership of other team members to ensure delivery of the solution on plan and adhering to technical best practices.
- Ensures that testing is being completed with high standards and on schedule. If the project doesn't have a separate QA team, then the SL will take ownership of the QA process to ensure the solution is thoroughly tested prior to SIT / UAT
- Documents requirements for custom development and works with custom development team to ensure requirements are met
- Develops and delivers onsite end user training, as needed
- Participates in services estimation to support pricing for bid and in other parts of the bid response process, as required by bid structure
- Supports proposals and participates in post bid activities including clarifications, support of short list presentation and supporting scope definition in contract development and negotiations
Qualifications
- A minimum of 7 years of software delivery experience is required; 9+ years is preferred. Utility industry background is required
- Excellent written, verbal communication skills
- Extensive experience with utility industry and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) knowledge including but not limited to Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS), Customer Information Systems (CIS) and HeadEnd Systems (HES)
- Collaborative nature and willing to share knowledge across broader team while contributing to reusable collateral
- Mentor and develop other resources on the team
- Clear and timely communication internally and externally
- Ability to interact with the client team including project sponsors and end users of the system
- Act as an SME on AMI implementation and integration projects as well as RFP responses.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues and perform root cause analysis
- 15+ years working on projects involving integration between systems, writing SQL queries or similar, performing data mapping and data transformation.
- Experience working with real-time systems and data connectivity is preferred.
- Experience with scripting language such as Python, Ruby, JavaScript
- Experience with Webservices, XML, SOAP, RESTful. Etc.
- Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Technology from an accredited school or university or, equivalent working experience in lieu of degree
- Travel: Up to 50%

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.
Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.

Salary Range
