Overview
TRC is seeking an early career to mid-level Environmental/Civil Engineer, Geologist, or Environmental Scientist with 2 to 5 years of previous environmental/civil consulting experience to join our growing Engineering, Construction & Remediation team in Chicago, Illinois. Our engineering staff provide support for permitting, design, assessment, remediation and construction on a wide variety of technically challenging projects. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual looking for career growth with a demonstrated background to support regulatory compliance projects, renewable energy projects, and/or due diligence efforts. Responsibilities
- Ability to work independently or on a project team with demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications, presentations, analytical data interpretation, professional judgement, and team building skills.
- Involvement in all project aspects including design/study development, construction management, assistance with project management, RFIs/Submittals reviews/responses, and client meetings.
- Conduct field assessment and compliance inspections and environmental site assessments including background research, site visits, data evaluation and report writing/preparation.
- Develop Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plans and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) independently for senior review.
- Assist with preparation and submittal of compliance related to stormwater, industrial wastewater, EPCRA, hazardous waste reports, permit applications (NPDES), etc., and ensure monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual permit inspection and/or reporting requirements are met.
- Provide engineering and permitting support for alternative energy development projects.
- Perform Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) site visits and report preparation.
- Perform engineering calculations related to soil, stormwater, and/or groundwater; review operations and maintenance systems and data related to storm or wastewater systems, and assist with general civil aspects associated with monitoring, assessment, or remediation at sites in a variety of industries, including renewable energy projects.
- Manage, or assist Project Managers with, proposals, design fee estimates/budgets, schedules, client relations, including large and complex projects/tasks.
- Travel regionally and state-wide on short and long-term assignment, as needed. Travel may range from 0% to 40% of the position on average, depending on the time of year and type of project.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science and/or Master of Science Degree in Civil, Geological or Environmental Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited university. Candidates with a degree in Environmental Science, Geoscience, Hydrogeology, Geology, or other Engineering disciplines will also be considered based on relevant experience.
- 2-5 years of previous environmental and/or civil engineering/land development/sitework experience with an environmental or engineering consulting firm.
- Strong communication and writing skills, with an ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment, managing multiple deadlines and varied priorities for multiple Project Managers.
- Proficient technical writing, communication, and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
- Solid technical and problem-solving skills and a willingness to accept short- and long-term field assignments, with some overnight travel possible.
- Detail-oriented and experienced with effective management and prioritization of multiple simultaneous tasks or projects.
- A valid driver’s license and able to pass a background check for access to client sites.
- Ability to work in office full time or as required. Normal expectation is a minimum of 3 days in the office or on-site.
- Abide by Company policies and procedures.
- Ability to work overtime as project schedules dictate.
- Ability to work on multiple, fast-paced projects simultaneously.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Previous 40-hour HAZWOPER health and safety training with current 8-hour refresher.
- Knowledge of City of Chicago or state regulations other than Illinois a plus, but not required.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification or plans to earn certification within six months.
- Professional Engineer and/or Geologist license or willingness to obtain licensure when eligible.
- Additional trainings and certifications related to the environmental field are desirable and should be noted (e.g., Certified Asbestos Inspector, etc.).
- Previous experience with railroad clients is a plus.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or ArcGIS or other environmental or engineering-related software applications (HydroCAD, WinSLAMM, etc.) is a plus.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.
Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
