Overview
TRC is actively seeking highly motivated and experienced Field Scientists and Field Engineers to support our growing Engineering, Consulting and Remediation practice in New England (and beyond) managed from our Lowell, MA office.
TRC is seeking experienced Field Scientists and Field Engineers to join our Engineering, Consulting and Remediation (ECR) practice in Lowell, Massachusetts. The team excels in:
- Emergency response for utility companies and Class I and II railroad clients;
- Brownfield revitalization support and design services for community programs and development organizations;
- Due diligence, remedy design, and implementation under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan and similar response action and remediation programs in NH, ME, CT, VT, and RI.
- Environmental, health and safety (EHS) compliance support and program development needs.
Responsibilities
- Support a wide variety of environmental response projects, including site investigation and remediation, on project sites and in office;
- Respond to select clients on an on-call emergency basis for local oil and/or hazardous materials (OHM) releases related to equipment accidents, weather events, and other exigencies that require expedited response actions and professional oversight and documentation (include intermittent on-call standby status and work during non-standard hours);
- Manage and perform a variety of field assignments, including due diligence, environmental assessments, environmental investigations, site inspections, feasibility tests, remedial implementation, and construction oversight;
- Punctual attendance to assignments and client needs;
- Interpreting hydrogeological and chemical data, conducting analyses, identifying trends, comparing findings to regulations and clean-up standards to evaluate compliance;
- Preparing calculations and quantity take-offs;
- Contribute to the authorship and review of technical documents, reports, and studies;
- Prepare cost estimates and proposals for field investigations and to support remedial planning;
- Facility with digital technology(e.g., tablet-based field data collection systems);
- Support the preparation of permit applications;
- Collaborate effectively with fellow professionals and other technical disciplines (e.g., engineers, chemists, hydrogeologists, geologists/geotechnical engineers, etc.) to meet project goals;
- Approach training and development efforts and coaching offered by TRC with energy and intentionality;
- Expect and adapt to diverse work assignments often running simultaneously and at different stages and paces;
- Maintain a billable utilization target and perform work in accordance with agreed upon budget for the scope of work and schedule with minimal to modest levels of supervision; and
- Ability to work independently or in a project team with demonstratable clear written and oral communications, presentations, analytical, professional judgment, and collaborative skills;
- Ability to grasp scientific concepts and apply them to technical challenges in a principally self-directed manner;
- Ability to learn through on-the-job experience;
- Possession of a valid driver's license and willingness to travel for project work up to 15 to 25% of the time (overall);
- Ability to work in outdoor environments for extended periods of time;
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
Qualifications
- Possess a Bachelor's degree or higher in Geology, Environmental Science, or Engineering (e.g., environmental, civil, chemical) from an accredited university.
- 2 to 5 years of prior work experience in environmental consulting is strongly desired.
- A candidate on track for professional geologist (PG), professional engineering (PE), or Licensed Site Professional (LSP) licensure is a plus.
- Ability to respond to client needs with quality, speed, energy, and professionalism.
- Capability to effectively manage field and office tasks to completion without supervision, including tasks involving coordination with subcontractors and technical equipment vendors.
- Understanding and awareness of construction and environmental health and safety practices.
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification (with applicable refresher certification) necessary.
- 10-hour or 30-hour OSHA Construction Safety certification is a plus
- Experience in spill plans, stormwater plans, Tier II reporting, and other EHS compliance are helpful skills.
- Reading and understanding drainage plans and as-builts and experience inspecting and confirming entry points, flow paths, and discharge
- Understanding and applying basic scientific, theories, practices and existing technologies to support the development of solutions for technical problems with firm scope and budgets;
- Experience with coordinating, performing, and managing field assignments, including drilling and monitoring well installation oversight, soil classification, soil/groundwater/soil vapor sampling, etc.).
- Excellent writing/verbal communication skills for interaction with multi-disciplinary staff.
- Excellent organization and planning skills.
- Experience with development of work plans (i.e., USEPA QAPPs), site investigation reports, proposals, and cost estimates a plus.
- Client focused, end-point oriented, with commitment to timely and high-quality work product delivery.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background, check, drug screen and motor vehicle records check.
- Valid Driver’s License

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.
Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company’s annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
