Job Description
We are seeking an experienced in-house attorney to join the SmartRent Legal team as Deputy General Counsel (“DGC”). This position will be performed in-person, located in our headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ.
As Deputy General Counsel, you will be an essential part of the success of the Company, with responsibility for a broad range of legal matters, including commercial contracting, litigation, employment, strategic partnerships, privacy matters, and other operational matters as necessary. You will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and will have frequent interaction with senior leadership team members across the business. Responsibilities
- Partner with Chief Legal Officer and other key decision-makers across the company to support SmartRent’s success in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Manage the overall commercial contracting process, including actively participating in the drafting, review, negotiation, approval, and reporting of commercial contracts and other transactional agreements.
- Advise on commercial matters, including partnering with the business leadership to accelerate and streamline agreements, and related policies and processes as needed.
- Manage all litigation matters with assistance of outside counsel and prepare status reports, budgets, and disclosure updates.
- Participate in the management of a broad range of day-to-day legal functions across the company, including data privacy, intellectual property, and labor and employment matters.
- Provide prompt legal advice to SmartRent’s business to facilitate, improve and strengthen operational decision-making through integration of legal analysis as part of the overall business development process.
- Build strong relationships and gain trust across the organization; use legal expertise, business savvy and sound reasoning to seek constructive and pragmatic solutions.
- Utilize legal technology and optimize processes to enhance department performance, productivity, and cost savings.
- Collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams and be comfortable addressing novel legal issues and making well-reasoned decisions.
Required Qualifications
- JD and admission in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar jurisdiction;
- At least 10 years legal experience, with at least 3 years as in-house counsel.
- Experience negotiating and drafting complex commercial contracts, implementing contract management processes, and working with all operational departments on contract needs, including sales, procurement, employment, marketing, and partnership agreements.
- Experience managing litigation and budgeting process, preparing risk analysis and status summaries for overall case strategy and related disclosures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, efficiently, and strategically, with an emphasis on proactivity, prioritization, and client service in a fast-paced, multi-faceted business, where workflow and demands may change rapidly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with corporate governance matters, SEC reporting and disclosure, compensation, and other public company matters.
- Experience with Legal Tracker, Lexion, and Salesforce solutions.
- Experience managing insurance programs, including underwriting, claims, and coverage issues.
- First hand litigation experience.
