Position Summary

The Senior Director of Data is responsible for the process leadership of building Rubicon’s data platform, establishing data engineering and governance best practices, and delivering the certified data layer that powers our operational processes and AI initiatives. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, you will play a crucial role in executing a companywide technology transformation, centered on clean, governed, trust data first, followed by automation and AI.

Through cross functional collaboration with Technology, Billing, Data Management, Account Management, and other internal teams, you will play a crucial role in order-to-cash transformation, our reporting migration to Power BI, and AI initiatives in contract intelligence and billing enforcement. The Senior Director of Data owns the end-to-end build of the modeled, documented, and governed data platform that the business trusts.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and operate Rubicon's lakehouse architecture on Databricks, including ingestion, transformation, orchestration, storage design, and cost management.
  • Establish engineering best practices: version-controlled pipelines, Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) for data, testing and data quality checks, environment management, and required proactive documentation.
  • Lead the cleanup, deduplication, documentation, and modeling of Rubicon's core business entities (customers, contracts, sites, services, invoices) so they are defined once and reused everywhere.
  • Stand up practical governance: ownership and stewardship, write-access control, change management, a business glossary, and data quality metrics reported monthly
  • Deliver the governed semantic layer that Power BI reports certify against, supporting the retirement of our legacy reporting platform.
  • Provide the structured, trustworthy data that our contract-intelligence and billing-enforcement initiatives depend on, working with delivery partners and the security team.
  • Lead internal data staff, direct delivery-partner data workstreams to milestones and acceptance criteria, and build the internal capability to run the platform after the build.
  • Ability to travel and/or work onsite up to 20%.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This job has supervisory responsibilities including the direct supervision of data staff and project leadership.
  • Set clear goals, priorities, and performance expectations; ensure accountability.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, and partner with HR on employee matters.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Systems, Data Science, or related field preferred.
  • 8+ years in data engineering, data platform, or analytics engineering roles, with 3+ years leading teams or major programs required. Salesforce data experience preferred.
  • Order-to-cash, billing, or contract data domain experience is a plus.
  • Hands-on depth with Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, workflows) and Spark; strong SQL and Python skills.
  • Proven delivery of a lakehouse or modern data platform in production, ideally on Azure.
  • Experience establishing large scale/organization wide governance and data quality programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with dimensional and semantic modeling feeding BI tools, specifically Power BI.
  • Experience directing vendors or delivery partners against defined milestones.
  • The ability to communicate complex data topics (ex: data debt and its cost) in business terms to executive and finance leadership.
  • Exposure to document extraction or AI/ML data preparation is preferred.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and develop a team while empowering staff to take ownership of root cause solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Discretion and trustworthiness in handling sensitive information and supporting high-level strategic initiatives.
