POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Manager, Maintenance is responsible for leading the maintenance, controls, and reliability functions for manufacturing equipment and facility systems. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, automation, logic, and control systems to support troubleshooting, equipment optimization, continuous improvement, and long-term asset reliability.

The Manager, Maintenance will oversee maintenance personnel, controls engineers, and maintenance supervisors while supporting safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations. This position is also responsible for capital planning, machinery and equipment purchases, installation projects, environmental compliance, preventative and predictive maintenance programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Maintenance Management

  • Lead, train, develop, and manage the Maintenance Department, including maintenance supervisors, electrical technicians, mechanical technicians, and controls engineers.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership for troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, controls, automation, and PLC-related equipment issues.
  • Support and guide controls engineers and technicians in understanding equipment logic, control sequences, automation systems, sensors, drives, HMIs, PLCs, and related plant control systems.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with production needs.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Job Hazard Analysis, LOTO procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Manage facility environmental reporting requirements and ensure proper handling and safe disposal of waste.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company, provincial/state, and federal regulations.

Budget, Capital Planning, and Equipment Projects

  • Manage the capital budget development process, including project numbers, timelines, cost tracking, budget status, and return on investment.
  • Lead capital projects involving new equipment, equipment upgrades, automation improvements, controls changes, and facility enhancements.
  • Manage project timelines, vendors, contractors, budgets, installations, and commissioning activities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for new machinery purchases, existing equipment modifications, and control-related upgrades.
  • Assist the management team in establishing targets for training, maintenance costs, staffing, efficiency, R&D, and material expenses.
  • Coordinate preventative and predictive maintenance programs, including spare parts planning and critical equipment inventory.

Controls, Logic, and Continuous Improvement

  • Support troubleshooting and improvement of production equipment by applying knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical systems, PLC logic, automation controls, and process flow.
  • Work with controls engineers and maintenance teams to review equipment logic, identify failure points, and implement reliable corrective actions.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining RS Technologies, engineering and maintenance standards.
  • Partner with Production, Engineering, Materials, and Quality teams to solve equipment, process, and quality-related problems.
  • Analyze facility energy usage, downtime trends, equipment failures, and maintenance costs to identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in the research, trial, selection, and implementation of new processes, equipment, automation, and control technologies.
  • Assist the Materials Department with the selection and evaluation of equipment suppliers, mechanical vendors, electrical vendors, and component manufacturers.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action processes to improve equipment uptime, reliability, safety, and production efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TRAINING / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automation, Controls, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial maintenance environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical systems, controls, automation, PLC logic, HMIs, drives, sensors, and industrial troubleshooting.
  • Experience leading maintenance teams, technical personnel, or control related functions preferred.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, capital projects, equipment installations, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, train, and develop maintenance and controls personnel.
  • Ability to think strategically while also executing detailed maintenance and project plans.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Strong understanding of safety, compliance, and manufacturing best practices.
