Summary:
The Senior Failure Analysis Engineer, will be a technical expert in the Product Engineering and Technology organization and throughout Powin. This position will be responsible for leading the assessment of issues or failures from many sources and interfacing with critical stakeholders such as Hardware, Software, Firmware, Project Success, Quality, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders as needed. The Senior Failure Analysis Engineer, will travel to sites (as needed) to conduct onsite investigation, lead root cause analysis (RCA), diagnose issues, and work with appropriate stakeholders to communicate updates and execute corrective actions.

Job Details:

  • Responsible for onsite investigation of events involving equipment damage or safety concerns
  • Lead the RCA of field, design, and manufacturing failures
  • Conduct RCA by replication of symptoms through targeted, well designed experimentation
  • Establish and maintain confidential documentation and databases related to failure analysis
  • Maintain records, prepare inspection and failure data reports, and provide recommendations relating to failure analysis
  • Provide updates in regular meetings and draft, deliver daily status reports (as needed)
  • While managing an incident response, schedule and complete follow-up on failure analysis tasks, including providing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and oversight of daily action items for onsite personnel
  • Travel as required to gain first-hand knowledge of field issues and communicate resolutions
  • Identify and obtain failure samples to use to support investigations
  • Identify design or quality changes necessary to prevent future recurrence and communicate to appropriate teams
  • Communicate findings and information to Service organizations and assist in creation of work instructions and procedures
  • Share investigation plans, results, and proposed resolutions with customers in a clear and understandable manner
  • Support cross-functional training and knowledge exchange on tools and solutions
  • Understand life cycle of Powin products, including maintaining awareness of implication of design changes to internal stakeholder groups
  • Work independently to identify issues and quantify impact to business and customers
  • Propose and execute steps to investigate difficult, cross functional problems while under time pressure
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Fire Prevention, or a similar field, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience with fire cause investigation and reporting, battery cell failure analysis, or similar relevant experience
  • Familiarity with or training with HAZWOPER
  • Demonstrated experience with leading RCA’s for manufacturing or technology organizations
  • Ability to independently manage projects within budget and timeline constraints
  • Ability to work cross functionally, explain designs and concepts to others with different backgrounds/degrees
  • Flexible with design iterations and changes in direction
  • Solid analytical, and problem-solving skills and can work independently and manage the workload of multiple projects and tasks
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support international teams
  • Ability to travel (both domestically and internationally) with short notice
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring junior colleagues
  • Experience with any of the following is a plus:
    • NFPA 921
    • Certified Fire Investigator training
    • Programming (C++, Python, SQL, LabVIEW, Matlab, other)

  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as those rated to CAT4
  • Frequently required to: stand; walk; balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch
  • Ability to move throughout job-site which includes minor obstacles (incline, uneven terrain) and could include working from ladders
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to monitor and manage work in variable weather conditions
