Front-end Engineer
Hippo Harvest
Hippo Harvest Front-end Engineer Pescadero, CA · Full time
Front-end Engineer
Description
Overview
In a world increasingly impacted by climate change, pollution, and population growth, conventional production of fresh/fruiting vegetables is unsustainable. Compared to field production, greenhouse hydroponic methods use 90% less water, increase yields, reduce food waste, use fewer pesticides, eliminate fertilizer runoff, and allow crops to be grown locally. However, greenhouse producers make up only a small part of today’s market due to high capital/labor costs and operational complexity. To close this gap, Hippo Harvest uses new methods of hydroponics, robotics, and machine intelligence to re-imagine greenhouses and build the sustainable, economical, and scalable production systems of the future.
As a front-end engineer, you’ll build interfaces for users across our organization, primarily focused on our commercial and operations teams. We are on the cusp of substantially scaling our operations, and having purpose-built tools that enable workers and supervisors to efficiently and effectively do their jobs is essential. Similarly, our commercial team needs to cope with the good problems associated with having a successful product/market fit, and the customer interaction challenges that come with high demand. Future areas of focus will be at the junction of plant science, machine learning, operations, and commercial planning, as you’ll need to present complicated data in a way that makes it intuitive to use for complex decision-making. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished engineer, with a passion for UX/UI, good skills in handling data, and who’s excited by fast iteration with a diverse and responsive internal set of stakeholders.
You Will
- Take over ownership of our operations-facing interfaces, working closely with stakeholders to refine and improve them
- Lead efforts to move operational and commercial interfaces from a bespoke database backend to a new vendor API
- Build responsive, mobile-friendly UI that gives operators insight into the state of different robots and automated components in our system, and supports basic control and troubleshooting
- Design and engineer an “air traffic control” system that equips operations supervisors to identify and address problems
- Use dashboarding interfaces to present engineering and corporate KPIs targeted to different audiences throughout the company
You Have
- Expertise in React and Typescript
- Experience interacting with databases, directly with SQL and through APIs (e.g., REST, GraphQL)
- Some experience with low code tools like Retool or Appsmith
- A passion for UX/UI and addressing customer needs with fast iteration times
- Knowledge of dashboarding/data visualization tools, such as Metabase or Tableau
- Experience in WebAssembly, especially with Rust, is a nice-to-have, as we’ve written some of our more engineer-focused interfaces in that
- The ability to flex into backend and data engineering are nice-to-haves, though will not be the primary focus of this role
We Offer
- An exciting and fun work environment where your contributions will make a true difference
- A hybrid work environment, with 1 day a week in person at our Pescadero facility, and 4 days a week working from home
- Competitive salary from $118,658 - $140,000 based on level
- Full benefits package including six weeks of paid vacation, medical/dental/vision/life insurance, twelve weeks of paid parental leave, 401k with company match, company stock options
Salary
$118,658 - $140,000 per year
