What’s this role about?
Project Engineer – Japan role will focus on supporting the operation of live/operational DR (Demand Response) and FTM BESS projects, while also accelerating the development of new opportunities through existing partnerships. The role involves on-site activities such as technical discussions with customer, troubleshooting, customer support, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders to ensure stable operations and market growth in Japan.
Key responsibilities include:
- Handling technical issues for commissioned projects, preparing initial reports, and explaining outcomes directly to customers
- Supporting remote commissioning tests and assisting with the installation, configuration, and testing of aggregator equipment (panels)
- Responding to technical inquiries from customers
- Working closely with the Sales team, joining customer meetings to provide technical explanations and help accelerate deal closure
- Sharing information and coordinating with internal teams (Sales, Development, NOC, Finance)
- Supporting new project negotiations and development in collaboration with existing partners
The ideal candidate will have a foundation in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or Industrial Automation, with knowledge (or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge) in energy metering, VCTs, control systems, PLCs, Control SLDs, communication protocols, and grid interconnection processes.
Additional experience is desirable, such as:
- Troubleshooting and inspection of electrical equipment
- Drafting technical reports and documentation
- Supporting remote commissioning tests and aggregator equipment (panels) installation work
- Providing technical input during customer meetings or negotiations
This role requires someone who is motivated to take on new challenges, even when facing tasks or problems they have never encountered before. English conversation skills are not mandatory (support from Japanese managers and colleagues is available), but the candidate should be able to use translation or AI tools (such as ChatGPT) to read and translate English documents proficiently and ideally be motivated to improve their English skills through this role.
The candidate must be able to act as a bridge between technical and commercial teams, communicate smoothly with Japanese stakeholders/colleagues, adapt flexibly to a wide range of responsibilities including key account management, technical support, new business development, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Work conditions
- Fully remote work from home (a Japan office in Tokyo exists, but attendance is not mandatory)
- Extended travel throughout Japan will be required to support stakeholder engagement and on-site work/inspection
What will I be doing?
Major Accountabilities:
- Native Japanese speaker and proficient speaker in Energy contexts
- Support sales team on technical discussions with customers/partners to resolve issues of live/operational projects and facilitate project expansion/acceleration (main role of Post-sales account management)
- Undertake the project manager function of live/operational projects
- Develop understanding of customer sites, installed assets, processes, and the flexibility available in their operation
- Assist with installation and commissioning of projects in a timely manner (support role)
- Engaging with stakeholders internally and externally (customers / third parties) to resolve troubleshoot and maintain customer satisfaction
- Report plans/progress in concise summary form to the Head of Audit/Commissioning Japan, maintaining up-to-date internal records (e.g., SharePoint)
- Provide structured feedback to the development team on tools and services, focusing on lessons learned from live/operational projects to improve customer satisfaction
- Other activities and new service offerings that may arise as the role develops
- Communicate project status, issues, and risks internally by preparing concise summaries for the Head of Audit/Commissioning Japan
- Assist in monitoring live/operational projects and provide feedback for continuous improvement
What do I need to be a good technical fit for this role?
- Degree in a technical field, electrical eng, mechanical eng, automation eng, energy engineering or similar field (desirable not essential)
- 5+ years post grad working experience in electrical, control, power engineering, or similar fields
- Background (Energy utility, TSO/DSO, EPC) or working knowledge experience of industrial systems (SCADA, BMS, PLC) would be beneficial
- IT skills including networking, database queries, troubleshooting would be of benefit
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Japanese)
- English conversation skills are not mandatory but the candidate should be able to use translation or AI tools (such as ChatGPT) to read and translate English documents proficiently and ideally be motivated to improve their English skills through this role
- Excellent record keeping and ability to log and record any site issues on Sharepoint
- Willingness to engage with issues that arise
- Demonstrate the ability to work on your own initiative without immediate hands-on support
- Organized, energetic and self-motivated
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of software tools
- Highly numerate, good attention to detail
