Boston Metal is commercializing cutting edge extractive metallurgy technology that will revolutionize primary metals production, while decreasing cost and lowering environmental impact.

This fast-paced startup company is looking for a Process Development Engineer to join the team.

This position will be developing post-processing routes for the manufacturing of inert anodes used for Metal Oxide Electrolysis (MOE). This includes but is not limited to machining, non-destructive testing (NDT), surface treatments, mechanical design, data analysis, and reporting.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and optimize post-processing routes for inert anodes including machining, non-destructive testing, and surface treatments.
  • Coordinate with external vendors to facilitate development and execution of post-processing methods.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups inside Boston Metal to ensure alignment with broader milestones.
  • Develop internal standards and requirements for post-processing.
  • Design in-house experiments to understand process-structure-property relationships, present results, and make recommendations for next steps.
  • Maintain a safety mindset while working in a fast-paced environment.

Required Qualifications

This position requires a minimum education level of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, or similar field. Qualified candidates will have 3-5 years of experience in a machine shop, manufacturing, or industrial environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Proficient in computer aided design (CAD) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Knowledge of machining methods, equipment, and tools including lathe, end-mill, and/or electric discharge machining (EDM).
  • Experience with powder metallurgy, high-temperature, and/or brittle materials processing.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing techniques including ultrasonic, dye penetration, eddy current, and/or x-ray.
  • Experience with surface modification treatments and coatings.
  • Laboratory equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Good record keeping and organization skills.

Physical Demands

  • The employee must be able to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as required by the specific work activity which may include: N95 mask or respirator; various types of gloves/hand protection; safety shoes; head protection; and protective clothing.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stoop or crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee has potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste, and occasional exposure to moving equipment, the risks of which are minimized through compliance with established use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety policies and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel in and out of state may be required 10-20%.
